A very rare lunar eclipse occurred during the early hours of 21 December 2010.It is the first time a full lunar eclipse has occurred during winter solstice since
1638 and the next one will occur in 2094.
A lunar eclipse happens when the sun, Earth, and moon align--with the Earth in the middle. By virtue of that placement, there is always a full moon during a lunar eclipse. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is viewable for quite some time and is safe to view.

Despite being in shadow, the Moon did not become invisible, as there was still residual light deflected towards it by our atmosphere.
